Set in the thriving underground club scene in Mumbai. This show follows the lives of various drag kings who perform in the city. The main act is that of Rocky aka Shammsher. Rocky pays homage to Shammi Kapoor and that golden era of Hindi cinema. Joined by a motley crew of women who revel in drag performance this cabaret-like show takes the audience into a grimy secret world that gives you the license to be whoever you want. 
 
Using dance, music and some amount of projection, this show weaves an exciting and provocative tale of women and their celebration of masculinity.

About the artist

Sheena Khalid is a director, writer and performer based in Mumbai. She has completed a two year full time course in theatre creation from the London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA). She is the co-founder of the theatre company known as The Patchworks Ensemble, whose first production Ila was named as one of the `top five productions of 2014` by the Indian Express. She has also been part of the acclaimed show Tape AKA the Gentlemen’s Club which has been touring since August 2015. She has collaborated with The Welcome Trust UK and The Asia Society to create specific commissioned works of theatre. Sheena has been associated with Rajat Kapoor’s Cinematograph on two shows - Nothing like Lear (technical team) and Macbeth (performer). Sheena conducts drama training workshops for adults, children and corporate organisations.

Puja Sarup is the co-founder of Patchworks Ensemble where she has co-directed the award winning show 'Ila', as well as the critically acclaimed drag king show 'Gentlemen's Club AKA Tape'. She has also most recently devised and co-directed 'Fly by Night'. Puja has been active in theatre since 2003. Her stage credits include 'Hamlet - The Clown Prince' (for which she won the META award), 'S*x, M*rality & Cens*rship', 'All About My Mother', 'Grey Elephants in Denmark', 'Ila', 'The Gentlemen's Club AKA Tape' and 'Fly by Night'. Puja has also been associated with the French theatre companies, Footsbarn and Buchinger's Boots. She was awarded the 2010 Vinod Doshi Fellowship, and the J. N. Tata Scholarship in 2011 that funded a 3-year movement theatre course (based on the Lecoq pedagogy) in Helikos in Florence, Italy. Pujas last project was a collaboration with Felix M. Ott and Sandbox Collective for Ramanaya.

 

Rachel D'Souza is a writer, scenographer, dramaturge, and actress working in varied capacities with The Company Theatre Workspace. Her efforts are presently directed towards developing the artistic and administrative programme for TCT Workspace. She also handles all artist residencies at the Workspace and supervises farming and plantation activities on the campus. She maintains a keen interest in land preservation and building a self-sustained life/work module for artists at the centre. She trained in physical theatre at LISPA (London International School of Performance Arts) and has worked as a performer with different directors in clown narratives, musicals and theatre of objects, amongst other forms. In The Company Theatre productions, she often functions as a researcher and writer of performance texts for devised and adapted plays.

 

Ratnabali Bhattacharjee is an Indian actress. She is known for her roles in the films, The Epiphany (2013), Mumbai Calling (2007), Sold (2014) and Waiting (2016).

 

The Black Box

  • Latecomers can only be allowed in at intermission or at an appropriate pause in the program and as per the instructions of the organisers
