The Island of Dreams and Ideas
Curated by: The Wire
The Island of Dreams and Ideas is the finale to the Urdu week, a week-long celebration of Urdu on the first anniversary of The Wire Urdu.
Where is the island of dreams and ideas?
Bombay was a magnet for writers, poets, filmmakers, and artists in the 1940s and much of the fervor of the times was progressive. Urdu writers came to the city attracted by its liberal ways and its willingness to give space to every kind of thought and voice. That energy continued till well into the 1970s in creative writing and journalism. But where are those voices now? Is the Mumbai of today liberal anymore? Where have all those progressives gone?
In a unique exploration of the topic, the evening will see a dialogue between Nandita Das, Danish Hussain, Rakhshanda Jalil and Javed Anand followed by a reading of various texts by the formidable Naseeruddin Shah.
