As another international collaboration for G5A, it exemplifies and reinforces the importance of innovation, creativity and collaboration in the field of contemporary art.
Mezcal Jazz Unit's music is defined by the Mediterranean temperament of its musicians, the reminiscences of traditional melodies, an unabashed attraction for the Orient, a rock like energy and a sense of humor. On the other hand, Bickram’s music is strongly influenced by thumri and khayal genres of the Patiala gharana and he is known to experiment and reinterpret music and culture as he dabbles in a vast repertoire of musical genres, from classical, rock, new-age to fusion.

About the artist
For Mezcal Jazz Unit, "jazz" means no musical conformism, open minds, integration of world musical streams, and lots of adventure. With the respected artistry of Christophe Azema on soprano sax, Jean-Marie Frédéric on guitar, Emmanuel de Gouvello on fretless bass and Daniel Solia on drums, and their years of traveling and interacting with many cultures, Mezcal performances are full of humor and expressive attitude.
Their latest project is "Mango Dream", a collaboration with three Khmer musicians from the Cambodian Living Arts Association.
Creative jazz projects were born from their travels and encounters with talented musicians from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, USA, and India.
One such meeting and collaboration was with one of India's greatest tabla and percussion maestros, Bickram Ghosh, who holds the rare distinction of being one of the most well-known names in the world of Indo-fusion music. Bickram is known to experiment and reinterpret music through a vast repertoire of musical genres, from classical, rock, new-age to fusion. He is particularly known for combining Indian classical traditions with body-drumming and rhythmic-scatting.
Bickram played on four albums that were nominated for Grammies including George Harrison's Brainwashed. He played on "Full Circle" with Pandit Ravi Shankar, which won Shankar a Grammy.
Bickram brings with him the young maestro of the electric sitar Abhishek Mallik who offers an exciting range of Indian melodies to the collaboration.
Together, Mezcal Jazz Unit & Bickram Ghosh will bring a unique blend of Jazz with Indian Classical music, with diverse energies and interpretations of each other’s styles, and renew a collaboration that began over a decade ago.
